September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Did you know that in South Carolina, one person dies by suicide every 11 hours? It is the second leading cause of death in the state for people age 15-34. Ask someone you know in their 20s how many people they have known or gone to school with who has committed suicide, and the answer will likely surprise you.

As parents, business owners and employees in the food & beverage industry, our crew here at Ted’s Butcherblock finds these statistics to hit a little too close to home. That’s why we chose the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (SC Chapter) as the beneficiary for our Friday Wine Tastings during the third quarter this year. The money collected during the weekly tastings from July through September will be donated to the the fundraising efforts of the state-wide chapter of this national organization.

The AFSP raises awareness, funds and scientific research and provides resources and aid to those affected by suicide. It has set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate by 20% by 2025. Among it’s fundraising initiatives is the upcoming “Out of the Darkness Walk” which will take place locally on October 14th at Hampton Park in downtown Charleston.

You can learn more and support the AFSP’s efforts by visiting their website, sponsoring the upcoming Out of the Darkness Walk in Charleston, or visiting our Friday Wine Tastings through September.

Thanks for your support and for learning to be aware of the signs to look for that signify someone needs your help!
